It Is Not Fair To Say Twitter Ban Was Because Buhari’s Tweet Was Taken Down – Lai Mohammed

Information and Culture Minister, Lai Mohammed has stated that it is not right to attribute Twitter’s ban of operations in the country to the deleted tweet of President Buhari.

Appearing on an NTA programme on Friday June 11, Lai Mohammed said that the directive was issued over the provocation of views which could cause havoc in the country by the microblogging platform.

Other social media platforms operating in Nigeria, according to Mohammed, must first register with the Corporate Affairs Commission before applying for licensing with the NBC.

He said;

“People have tried to say Twitter was suspended because they deleted the president’s message. I think that is very unfair. We were very clear in what we said. We were very unambiguous that if any platform continues to promote the views of those who want Nigeria to be divided, we will suspend their operations.

“Secondly, we went ahead to say that henceforth, all OTT — over the top — and other social media platforms operating in Nigeria will have to first register with the Corporate Affairs Commission then apply for licensing with the NBC, that is the broadcasting commission.

“We gave the reason that this has become the platform of choice for [a] separatist leader in particular, who stays comfortably in Europe and directs people to attack the symbols of our sovereignty — the symbols of government authorities.”

In recent developments, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed revealed that the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is using Twitter as his medium to cause mischief and chaos in Nigeria.

The minister granted an interview with BBC News Africa as he defended the ban on Twitter by the Federal Government. He explained that the Federal Government banned Twitter for a reason because the persistent use of the platform is capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

He threw some shots at Nnamdi Kanu as he revealed that he passes instructions to his people through social media to attack and cause insecurity in the South East.
