Group writes South East Council of Traditional Rulers, NJC over imposition of Traditional ruler in Enugu Community.

A group known as The Concerned Citizens of Obuno Uno Autonomous Community, in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State has called on the leadership of the South East Council of Traditional Rulers led by Igwe Ambassador Lawrence Agubuzu to constitute a panel of enquiry to investigate the purported imposition of a traditional ruler in the Community.

This they said would not only sustained the confidence and respect the public had in the traditional institution but to avert a looming crisis in the area.

According to the group, the call was as a result of the recent purported presentation of certificate of recognition to chief Jack Nwatu as the traditional ruler of Obuno Uno, by the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Local Government and Rural Development, Deacon Okay Ogbodo with violation of the procedure.

The group while expressing disappointment over the attitude of the Commissioner said no verification nor election of any sort took place in their community for the Igweship stool before the purported presentation of certificate of recognition.

They further explained that allowing such impunity would set a bad precedence for the recruitment process of traditional Ruler in Enugu State and South East in general which would in turn throw many Communities in avoidable crisis.

The group also called on the National Judicial Council NJC, to investigate the level of “Contempt of Court” committed by Deacon Okey Ogbodo by presenting the certificate in defiance to or indeed not minding the pendency of the suits in a court of competent jurisdiction viz: Suit No. E/132/2019,E/30m/2020,HAG 13/2022.

Recall that the Coalition of Civil Society in Enugu State had earlier after noticing the gross misconduct called for the suspension of the Commissioner, Deacon Okay Ogbodo over a perceived corruption and flagrant abuse of office, promotion and instigation of crisis in Communities.

They equally demanded for an immediate withdrawal of the purported certificate of return issued by the Commissioner in fulfilment of his selfish agenda without delay and revert to rules and regulations guiding the conduct of traditional rulers election.

What was raising more concern or rather some doubts was the claim by the Commissioner at different fora that he acted under the instructions of the Governor,Dr Peter Mbah.

Not satisfied with this rumour, the entire people of Obuno Uno Autonomous Community are finding it hard to believe, owing to the fact that the Governor, Dr Peter Mbah is not only a Lawyer but a man of due process who would not like to disobey the law nor have a hand in causing crisis in the Communities he is superintending over.

The group maintained that the issue of traditional institution is sacred and should not be something to play politics with believing that the traditional rulers and the NJC should rise up now and save their institutions. The time to act is now.
